BREAST CONTOURING

Augmentation

Breast augmentation is the most common breast procedure, and is accomplished through the use of breast implants. There are two general choices for implants: saline and a silicone gel implant, both of which are approved by the FDA. The implant can be placed either on top of or below the underlying muscle--there are advantages and disadvantages to each of these methods which will be discussed during your consultation. The size of the augmentation is best considered with visual aids, therefore I recommend that my patients come to the consultation with photographs or magazine clippings that illustrate the desired effect. Since volume is only one of many characteristics of the breast, it is important to consider shelving, cleavage, shape and position, in addition to size. There are three well-accepted incision sites for insertion of the implant: under the breast, around the areola, and near the armpit. These and other matters will be discussed during your consultation. [back to top]

Mastopexy ("breast lift")

After pregnancy, breastfeeding, or weight loss, or simply over the course of time, the skin of the breast will stretch and lose elasticity so that the breast sits at a lower position. Breast lift, or mastopexy, is a procedure used in these cases to raise and reshape the breast. Based on the location of the nipple, several different techniques are available. Mastopexy is performed under local anesthesia, and post-operative discomfort is typically minor. Sometimes it is necessary to perform an augmentation along with the mastopexy to achieve an optimal result. This will be discussed during your consultation. [back to top]

Reduction

Large breasts can cause functional problems such as neck, back and shoulder strain, chronic infection, or an overall sense of "heaviness." Breast reduction is a procedure where the size of the breast is reduced by removal of a portion of breast tissue, and skin is removed to lift the breast to an optimal position. There are several techniques available based on the initial size of the breast and the desired result. These will be discussed during your consultation. [back to top]
